Company Description
Prosus is one of the world's largest technology investors, best known for its extraordinarily profitable early bet on Chinese tech giant Tencent. In 2001, Prosus's parent company Naspers invested just $32 million for a stake in the then-unknown Tencent—an investment now worth tens of billions of dollars. Today, Prosus still owns approximately 23% of Tencent, the company behind WeChat and one of China's most valuable corporations. Beyond Tencent, Prosus operates and invests in a diverse portfolio of consumer internet businesses. The company owns stakes in food delivery platforms including India's Swiggy and Germany's Delivery Hero, online classifieds businesses, fintech and payments companies like PayU, and e-commerce platforms such as India's Meesho. Products and services from Prosus's portfolio companies reach over 1.5 billion people across 89 markets. Prosus was created in 2019 when South African media conglomerate Naspers spun off its international internet assets into a separate Dutch-listed company. This structure was designed to unlock value that investors felt was trapped within Naspers. The company has a unique cross-ownership arrangement with its parent—Naspers owns the majority of Prosus, while Prosus owns approximately 49% of Naspers. Headquartered in Amsterdam with operations spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas, Prosus is aggressively expanding beyond its Tencent dependence. The company achieved profitability in its e-commerce operations in 2024 and announced major acquisitions including Just Eat Takeaway.com for €4.1 billion. Under new CEO Fabricio Bloisi (who took over in July 2024), Prosus aims to double its e-commerce revenue to €12 billion by 2028, betting particularly on India as its next major growth market.
