Company Description
ASM International is a leading supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, specializing in the deposition processes that create the ultra-thin layers of materials on silicon wafers. These layers are essential building blocks of computer chips—each modern processor contains dozens of precisely deposited films thinner than a human hair. The company is the world leader in Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), a technology that deposits materials one atomic layer at a time for extreme precision. ALD has become critical for manufacturing the most advanced chips, particularly the new 'gate-all-around' transistor designs used in 2-nanometer and smaller chips. ASM also provides epitaxy equipment (for growing crystal layers), PECVD systems, and vertical furnaces. Founded in 1968 in the Netherlands, ASM originally stood for 'Advanced Semiconductor Materials.' The company spun off its lithography operations in 1984—that spinoff became ASML, now worth over €250 billion. While ASML got the lithography business, ASM retained the deposition equipment expertise and has grown into a €2.9 billion revenue company in its own right. Headquartered in Almere with a global workforce, ASM serves all the world's major chipmakers including TSMC, Samsung, and Intel. With ALD accounting for more than half of equipment revenue, the company is well-positioned to benefit from the ongoing push toward smaller, more powerful chips. ASM is investing heavily in expansion, including a $100 million facility expansion in South Korea and new facilities in the Netherlands announced in late 2025.
