ArcelorMittal is the world's second-largest steel producer, manufacturing the steel that goes into cars, buildings, appliances, ships, and infrastructure around the globe. The company produced 57.9 million metric tonnes of crude steel in 2024—enough to build hundreds of Eiffel Towers—and also operates significant iron ore and coal mining operations to supply its steel mills. The company makes a wide range of steel products: flat steel (sheets and plates used in cars and appliances), long steel (beams and bars for construction), and specialized products like pipes for the energy industry. ArcelorMittal serves virtually every major industry including automotive, construction, packaging, and energy, selling primarily to local markets while also operating centralized trading operations. ArcelorMittal was created in 2006 through the merger of Arcelor (a European steel giant) and Mittal Steel (built by Indian entrepreneur Lakshmi Mittal). The Mittal family still owns approximately 40% of the company. The company is headquartered in Luxembourg, where it is building a major new headquarters in the Kirchberg business district—currently the largest construction project in Luxembourg. With operations spanning 19 countries and approximately 127,000 employees, ArcelorMittal generated $62.4 billion in revenue in 2024. The company is investing in decarbonization, with its Luxembourg operations already using 98% recycled materials in steel production. CEO Aditya Mittal (son of founder Lakshmi Mittal) leads the company through the steel industry's ongoing transformation toward greener production methods.
